The Selma-Montgomery Tuskegee Writing Program is an interactive, non graded, enrichment program that services a diverse  group of learners in grades seven through twelve.  The program is designed to infuse powerful critical thinking skills, journal response writings, as well as the effective use of newspapers in education (NIE) activities that are highly interesting, motivational and fun, yet challenging.

Through shared group discussions and oral journal responses, learners develop a higher level of confidence in their creative abilities and are able to demonstrate vast improvements in their oral/written communication skills.

The program is geared towards sparking the learners’ imaginations which shall boost/enhance their academic performance, thus enabling them to demonstrate proficiency in their assigned coursework.  As a result of the benchmarks as noted above and upon completion of the program.  Learners are provided greater opportunities to make positive differences in their respective schools.

Additionally, guest contributors are scheduled to provide inspirational topics relative to engaging an open dialogue with the learners by sharing pertinent information which detailed positive choices for improvements in their abilities.  Also, they are encouraged to select healthy and nutritious foods, maintain a daily exercise routine, set goals, develop effective study habits, and get an early start on identifying future career choices, etc….

This writing program is successful because of its highly qualified instructors and the collaborative efforts of Senator Quinton Ross, Dr. Craig Poucey, Alabama State Department of Education; Bernard A. Sewell, Executive Director of  The Selma-Montgomery-Tuskegee Tennis Foundation; University College of Alabama State University, Dr. Ann Marie Depas, Chairwoman; Dr. Evelyn Hodge, Dean; and Montgomery Parks and Recreation Director, Mr. Rob Spivery.
